Why should an employer prefer a mathematician over a software developer for some programming tasks?

Programming is like being an actor. The goal is never “to program” like the goal is never “acting” .The goal is the result. Then you need a programmer who understands a topic to build a solution for it.

Then: You have a programmer that knows a bit about the business (mathematics) or a Mathematician that knows a bit about programming. Who do you prefer?

Maybe in the team, it is easy to cover the lack of expertise in the programming of the Mathematician but it is not so easy to cover the lack of experience in Mathematics.

Beyond that. most times requirements are incomplete, and programmers make a lot of “obvious” stuff the no one mention. Then, when someone that knows about the business is programming it is more probable that reasonably covers those gaps.
